What is Love?

Last week we learned about some of the things Jesus said when he returned to Nazareth, the town where he grew up. We read the words he said: that Jesus was chosen by God to tell the Good News to the poor, setting people free, letting the blind see, and showing God’s love. What Good News that is!

Today we are wondering together:

What is love?

Talk with your grownup about what you think love is, and see if you can come up with some answers to the following questions.

  • What does love feel like?

  • What does love look like?

  • What does love act like?

  • What does love always do?

  • What does love never do?

You can also print out the page below to write or draw your thoughts.

Help us make a video!

Now that you have thought a little bit about what love means to you, ask your grownup to record a 3-5 second video of you answering the question, “What is love?” You can choose one of the sentences above to use, or make up your own answer. Send the video clips to Lianna at lianna@sanctuaryic.org or 319.321.7771 before this Friday, February 12. I will compile all the clips into a video that will be shared during our church service on Valentine’s Day, February 14. It will also be posted here on the Kids Wing Blog that day.

Thanks so much for your help! I can’t wait to hear your ideas!

What does the Bible tell us about love?

The topic of love is SO big and SO important that we could talk about it all day every day and still keep learning more! Jesus’ life on earth was full of examples of God’s love. We recently learned that Jesus loves people like a good shepherd protects and takes care of their sheep. Any time we read a story about Jesus in the Bible, we can wonder what it tells us about God’s love.

Here are some Bible verses that describe what love is. (There are lots more than this!) Click on the link to read them.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7, Romans 12:9, Psalm 36:7, 1 John 4:9, 1 John 4:12, 1 John 5:2, Galations 5:13, Romans 12:10

Wondering Questions

Valentine’s Day is a day set aside to celebrate love, but as followers of Jesus, we can and should try to practice love every day.

  • I wonder who you could show love to?

  • I wonder how you could show love?

  • I wonder when you feel God’s love around you?

Song

Let’s end with a song about love! I’ll be singing along with you!

Over the next 8 weeks, we will explore more about the stories of Jesus, and learn the amazing things Jesus said and did to show us what God’s love is like.
