Summer of Wonder: Stars

Each week during this Summer of Wonder, we are looking closely at a different part of God’s creation, wondering at the beauty, science, and mystery of the world around us. This week, we are examining the stars.

Scripture

The verses below list some places in the Bible that talk about stars in different ways. I wonder how we can feel close to or learn more about God as we think about the stars that God created?

Genesis 1:14-19; Psalm 147:4

Psalm 19:1-4 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

“The heavens tell about the glory of God.

The skies announce what God’s hands have made.

Each new day tells more of the story,

and each night reveals more and more about God’s power.

You cannot hear them say anything.

They don’t make any sound we can hear.

But their message goes throughout the world.

Their teaching reaches the ends of the earth.”

This Psalm is a song written about God.  It is part of the Old Testament in the Bible, the part written before Jesus came to be with the people on earth.  I wonder what the person who wrote this might have thought the night sky could tell us about God?  Do you think they thought God was good?

  • I wonder, what are some of the things we can see in the sky at night?

  • I wonder what you think of when you look at the night sky?  I wonder how it feels to you to see stars, or the moon, or even planets in the sky?

Story

In this book called, Stars, we can hear about how stars are everywhere, not just in the night sky. Look…

Check out Zoobean's Chief Mom reading our first month's featured pick: Stars by Mary Lyn Ray and Marla Frazee.

This book gave examples of other kinds of stars–not just the stars in the night sky. Where can you find stars around you in your life?

Activities

Let’s do some fun activities to explore stars more! Make your own constellation, learn how to do stargazing, look at real sky maps, and take some pictures or videos of your own!

All summer long on the Kids Wing Blog, we are celebrating this Summer of Wonder by looking closely at God’s amazing creation. We will be putting together a video at the end of summer of all the beautiful things we saw all summer, so any time you notice something interesting that God made, take a picture or a 3 second video, and send it to me! You can send that to my email lianna@sanctuaryic.org.

Song/Video Playlist
