Summer of Wonder - Bugs
/Each week during this Summer of Wonder, we have been looking closely at a different part of God’s creation, wondering at the beauty, science, and mystery of the world around us. This week, we are examining bugs and insects…all those little things that creep, crawl, fly, swarm, and wriggle!
Story:
Today we are reading the book, Step Gently Out. In our very busy and noisy world, it can be so amazing to become very slow, get very low, stay very quiet, and look very closely. What will you see?
I wonder if you had a favorite creature or a favorite picture in that story?
Scripture:
In the creation story in the Bible, found in Genesis 1:24-25, we read that God created all the small and crawling things.
Wondering:
I wonder what we can learn about God when we think of all of the different kinds of bugs and insects - the way they look and sound, how they move, and the things they can do?
Video Playlist:
Summer of Wonder Insect Playlist This collection of videos shows some of the incredible bugs and insects that are part of God’s creation! Do you have a favorite? Amazing!
Activity:
Do you know what happens to a tree if it falls down and no one moves it? If humans don’t chop it up, or pick it up, or remove it, what would happen to it? Have you ever explored an old rotten log that has been sitting awhile? The following activity can be done anywhere you can find a rotten log. It could be deep in the woods at a park, or even in your own backyard.
A Rotten Log (Click this link for a lesson + printable scavenger hunt + worksheet)
What will you find under your rotten log? What is living? What is moving? What is coming apart or decomposing?
Prayer
Dear God,
You made huge mountains and oceans,
and you made tiny ants and beetles.
Your creativity is amazing!
Help us care for the things you made.
Amen.
