Refuge - Safety in Uncertain Times

Last week, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr, we explored different ways we can help others through acts of service. We can show God’s love by helping our neighbors. This week we will continue to think about loving and caring for others.

Today we will listen to a story about what happened to Jesus’s family after he was born. After the shepherds left, after the three kings left, and Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were all alone in the stable in Bethlehem…then what happened?

Note: The video below shows the words but doesn’t read them aloud, so ask your grownup to read aloud to you if you need help. You may need to hit pause on pages with lots of words.

Wondering questions

Jesus lived in uncertain and unsafe times, but he experienced the love and care of neighbors.

  • I wonder how it would feel to be running away from danger during the night?

  • I wonder how it would feel to finally arrive in a place of safety?

  • I wonder where God could be in this story?

  • I wonder where God could be during our own lives when we feel alone or scared?

Bible Verses

The Bible is a collection of stories, poems, and events that help us know more about God and God’s people. There are many places in the Bible where God is called our refuge. What does refuge mean? Refuge means something that provides shelter and protection from danger. A sanctuary. (You may have noticed that our church is named Sanctuary! We hope it feels like a place of refuge for everyone.)

Let’s look at some of the verses about God as our refuge. Click the link below to read these Bible verses.

Activity

It can feel so reassuring to know that God is never far away from us, especially during times of trouble. God is ever-present, always near, offering refuge and strength to all who need it. Ask a grownup to help you print the coloring page and worksheet below. After you finish them, you can hang it in a place where you’ll be reminded of God’s love.

Safety in Uncertain Times

In times of uncertainty, when we are alone or scared, we can remember that God is our refuge and strength. Likewise, we can show love to others by caring for them, being a friend, and helping them.
