Loving Our Neighbors - Maybe I Can Love My Neighbor, Too

Last week we looked at the story of the Good Samaritan and learned about how Jesus answered the question, “Who is my neighbor?” Today, we are thinking about real things we can do to be a neighbor to others–not just people who live near us but all people around the world.

Our Sanctuary friends Rachel and Emberly are helping us tell our story today by reading the book, Maybe I Can Love My Neighbor, Too, by Jennifer Grant. Thank you for helping us, Rachel and Emberly! You are such kind neighbors!

Wondering Questions

I wonder who I can be a neighbor to?

I wonder what I can do to show kindness to others?

Winter Outerwear Clothing Drive

This fall Sanctuary is partnering with dozens of other faith communities (through the Consultation of Religious Communities) to collect and distribute winter outerwear. This is a very real way that we can be a neighbor to people around us.

We're accepting the following NEW and GENTLY USED items as donations:

  • winter coats

  • gloves or mittens

  • winter hats and scarves

  • winter boots and snow pants

  • warm socks

  • sweatshirts and sweaters

To participate, simply drop off the donations at one of these two collection sites:
1) Sanctuary, 2205 E. Grantview Dr., Coralville. There's a collection bin located outside of the sanctuary exit doors on the right side of the building.
2) The home of Bobby Outerson-Murphy, 1105 Keokuk St., Iowa City. There's a collection bin on the front porch.

Distribution of the items will begin in mid-October. Thank you!

Project

Did you know that you can make a warm and cozy scarf without a sewing machine? For this project, all you need is a pair of sharp scissors and some fleece fabric. Fleece does not fray after it is cut, so all you need to do is measure your fabric, cut it into 7-inch wide scarves, and add a fringe at each edge.

Note: There are three ways you can do the fringe: all tied together in one knot like the video shows, individual knots on each piece of fringe, or no knots at all–just left cut and hanging.

Here is a video showing just how easy it can be. Ask your grownup for help with this project.

If you like, you can make a scarf to donate to Sanctuary’s Winter Outerwear Drive, or maybe you have your own idea of someone who might need a warm scarf. Either way, happy crafting! You can send pictures of your finished scarves to Lianna at lianna@sanctuaryic.org or 319.321.7771 to share your creation!
