Caring For Creation - Water Protectors

Last week, we learned that when God created the world, humans were given responsibility for it. Isn’t that amazing? We are responsible for God’s creation. And when we are responsible for something, we protect it.

In the creation story from Genesis 1, we read that God’s Spirit hovered over the water, and God separated water and made it vital for all living things. Water is so important to our earth and its living things! (To explore water further, check out our Summer of Wonder - Water blog post!)

Story: The Young Water Protectors: A Story About Standing Rock

Today, we are going to read a book written by a 10-year-old boy who was part of a group of people who protested the construction of an oil pipeline. This group of people, including many Native American children and adults, worked together to try to protect their land and water from pollution that the pipeline could cause.

Wondering Questions

  • I wonder how it felt to see a pipeline being built over your people’s land and water supply?

  • I wonder how it felt to join together with so many people in protest?

  • I wonder how children and adults can take care of the land, water, and animals in our own communities?
